Tips For Worshiping With Children

Nursery and Cry Room
Children are always welcome at the services at Saint Mary’s, but we realize that some times they can be a distraction for the parents’ worship experience. We therefore have a fully equipped nursery to the left as you enter the main doors of the new church, and a windowed observation or “cry” room next to it for parents and children who just need a brief rest during the service.

This nursery is professionally staffed during the 8 and 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. services, but it is available for parents’ use at any time. It is also a good place to leave baby equipment bags, blankets, and such to disencumber parents a bit during the services.

Talk To Your Child Beforehand
Talk to your child about what good behavior in a place of worship looks like. Let your child know your expectations.

Plan Ahead
Plan ahead for your child's first introduction to worship by talking with your partner. Decide how much to expect the first time, who will take the child out if necessary and when that needs to happen.

Pick Up A Busy Bag
In front of the door to the Nursery is a basket of brightly colored ‘Busy Bags’ for you to pick up for your child on your way into church. They are filled with needed supplies to keep your child quietly entertained. Use these items when quiet is necessary, but let her participate during active times like singing or standing.

Two Cry Rule
Use the two cry rule. If your child cries out during worship, use toys, pacifier, food or books to redirect his attention and quiet him quickly. If there is a second outburst, you know he's made it as long as he can for this week and it's time to head for the nursery or the cry room.
